The first annual Tara Jam will take place at the honkin' Rye airfield BMX/skatepark in New Hamshire on February 23. Llanes is turning out to be the pinpoint from which incredible events flow, bringing the mountainbike and BMX community together in a wonderful new way.
Llanes, you may remember, broke her neck and back in the Jeep King of the Mountain finals Sept. 1, 2007. Since then, riders and friends have held a series of active benefits for the former world champion to raise money for necessities not covered by insurance. In fact, there have been so many great events held to benefit Tara that even though she is still recovering from a 'life altering' injury, the already-popular racer is now even more well known and loved than she was when she was an always-cheerful champion.
For a readable, and sometimes heart rending account of her efforts to bring back as much of her injured body as possible, including unexpected laughs, go to Tara's MySpace blog (search "Tara Llanes MySpace")
The Tara Jam 2008 will allow people to watch or ride or race with pros such as Jamie Goldman, Kyle Ebbett, Jeff Lenosky and more. For the $15 gate fee, you can spectate or ride in the venue that calls itself 'the best bmx/skatepark in New England."
There will be an "Amateur of the night" voted on by the pro riders.
There are carnival games with great prizes. so even if you're just there to spectate, you have just as much chance of winning as the fastest riders do. Some of the schwag includes bike frames, other components, helmets and more.
Organizers say the top am criteria is "flow, style, and having fun, so don't get caught with your competition face on."
