SALT CITY DERBY GIRLS SEEK FRESH MEAT
by JEN PHILON (aka: "LADY SHATTERLY")

After a successful second season, the league is finishing up 2007 with two tryout dates: Sunday, Nov. 11 and Sunday, Dec. 9. Both tryouts will be held from 10:30 a.m. until noon at Hollywood Connection (3217 South Decker Lake Drive) in West Valley City.

Women 21 and over are invited to try out. Participants must wear wrist guards, elbow pads and knee pads—helmets are optional. Skates are available for rental at Hollywood Connection.

Aspiring derby girls will be judged on various skating skills, but skaters of all levels are encouraged to try out—many current SCDG members hadn’t been on skates for years before joining the league. Women who have been active in other sports and activities (soccer, hockey, snowboarding, skiing, dance, etc.) are particularly encouraged to try out.

For those who want to test their skating skills before tryouts, SCDG is holding “Skate with a Derby Girl” nights, also at Hollywood Connection from 7-9 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 5 and Monday, Dec. 3. SCDG league members will be there to answer questions. This is a good time to see exactly what is required to make it into the league, and whether you will enjoy a competitive sport that offers some physical contact. If you play hockey, you will enjoy Roller Derby.

The Salt City Derby Girls are Utah’s first all-women, flat-track roller derby league, helping the sport of roller derby continue its national resurgence. Visit slcderby.com for more information on rules and on the history of the game.
