ADVENTURE SPORTS BY WINA STURGEON 5/7

2002 OLYMPIC OFFICIAL RETURNS

Herwig Demschar was the 2002 Olympic chief in charge of alpine skiing. Now he's coming back to his adopted home turf to work for Park City Mountain Resort's owner, Powdr Corp.

The Austrian, who was formerly involved with the Austrian ski team, left Salt Lake after the Games to work for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee, where he was VP in charge of venue management. But in the usual revolving door of Olympic Organizing committees, he left Vancouver for an offer he couldn't refuse: become the CEO of Powdr Corp.

Demschar's ski racing background may return some cachet to the Eagle Race Arena at PCMR. After dropping the America's Opening World Cup, the resort seemed to lose interest in big event ski races.

TOOTSIE POP ATHLETES

You've probably seen Tootsie Pop wrappers all your life, but have you ever really looked at one?

The chocolate-centered lollipop wrappers offer a surprise; drawings of little kids in action. A boy and girl ride skateboards, two boys drive numbered go karts, a girl rides on the back of a boy's tricycle. There is archery, swimming and tennis and baseball, boys and girls equally. Way to go, Tootsie Roll!

LOCAL ADVENTURE STAR GETS RECOGNIZED IN AD

Kristin Ulmer is Utah's most under appreciated adventure star. Outside Magazine calls her a "Ski guru," the North American Ski Industry voted her the best woman skier in the world 12 times, yet few people know of this Utah resident.

Now Blue Cross has called Ulmer a hero and featured her in a series of newspaper ads.

Ulmer started a sports clinic foundation called "Ski To Live" that works to help cancer patients cope with their diagnosis while having a more active outdoor livestyle.

FISH, CLIMB AND BIKE AT GALLIVAN CENTER

The Gallivan Center is hosting a "Summer Rec Fest" on Saturday, May 19. Salt Lake's Bike Collective will be there to help you tune up your bike, with free use of tools and staff to help; plus a bike valet to keep your wheels safe until you leave.

The Front Climbing Gym will have a climbing wall, and Western Rivers will have fly-fishing demos. There's even a Dutch Oven cook-off, probably with free samples; and bands playing throught the day. The best thing? It's all free!

The event at Gallivan is from 12:00-6:00 on Saturday, May 19.
