ADVENTURE SPORTS BY WINA STURGEON 6/4

DEER VALLEY GETS GOING

You know summer is really here when Deer Valley opens its lift-served mountain biking. Of the several resorts which offer it, Deer Valley is still the big class act. The trails are beautifully designed and maintained, the beginner and intermediate trails are accurately described, and there are 55 miles of gorgeous wilderness trails, plus two high speed quads to get you up the mountain fast, both at Silver Lake Lodge and Snow Park. It opens June 14.

Want to ride the newest full suspension models? The rental shop has brand new bikes. Helmets are required, but they can also be rented. The lifts open at 10:00 a.m. and close between 5-5:30 p.m. A day pass is $24, and there are also clinics and tours.

But here's the kicker: food. The Royal Street Cafe also opens on the 14th, and there are other eateries throughout the mountain. Think of it: a hard sweaty ride, then a relaxing glass of wine and lunch with a scenic view.

DV's Pedalfest Cross-Country Mountain Bike Race, for all ability levels, will take place on June 9. For more info, call organizer Ed Chauner at (801) 942-3498.

AUSTRIAN SKIERS BANNED FOR LIFE

More than a dozen skiers on the dominant Austrian team have been banned for life from Olympic competition after they were linked to the blood doping scandal that marred the 2006 Olympics in Turin.

They got caught because Italian cops followed former Nordic coach Walter Mayer, who visited team members. He had already been banned from the Games by the IOC because of former connections with blood doping cases at Salt Lake's Olympics in 2002.

His presence near the athletes sparked a raid by the police, where blood doping equipment was found. Meyer tried to flee, but was captured when he crashed his car a few blocks form where the Austrian athletes were staying.

Blood doping adds extra oxygen-carryng red cells to the blood supply, increasing endurance.

UDOT HOLDS HEARING ON PARLEYS CREEK TRAIL

Want some more amenities on Parley's Creek Trail? UDOT will hold a hearing at Surgar House Park, Lake Terrace, on June 12, between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m.; to discuss a plan to extend the trail and add more recreational amenities. That includes potties, folks.

Fixing the trail, as long as it's not too dumbed down, will create a nice easy hike for those who want a quick workout. But you don't have to show up to make your say. Call with your statement at (801) 293-3760, or email them at richeyangela@stanleygroup.com.

TAKE THIS: FEEL GOOD AND LOSE WEIGHT

It's an over the counter supplement made from the seeds of the seeds of the griffonia plant, but it increases your brain's uptake of that feel good hormone, seratonin; helps you sleep, and lowers your appetite.

The stuff is called 5-HTP. You can pay $30 for it at GNC, or get the same thing at WalMart for $7.99. Take five capsules a day, and within a week, you will find your appetite is way down, and you are eating less. No addiction, no side effects. Search it on the net, you'll think it's a wonder drug, especially after trying it. Plus, it's legal, no positives.
